The Sony WH-1000XM6 wireless noise cancelling headphones use the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3, which Sony says is seven times faster than the chip before it, to control 12 microphones. The Adaptive NC Optimiser adjusts the noise cancelling to the noise around you, air pressure and the fit on your head. The 30 mm drivers have a carbon fibre dome and were tuned with mastering engineers, and LDAC carries High-Resolution Audio over Bluetooth.
Six AI beamforming microphones pick out your voice on calls, and a double press of the NC/AMB button mutes the mic. Bluetooth 5.3 multipoint keeps two devices connected, LE Audio lowers latency for games, and Google Fast Pair and Swift Pair speed up pairing on Android and Windows. The headband is wider and the hinges fold, so the headphones fit the supplied case with its magnetic closure.
Sony rates the battery at up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on and 40 hours with it off. A full charge takes about 3.5 hours, and the 3-minute quick charge for about 3 hours of play needs a USB-PD adapter, which is not in the box. Sony gives no water resistance rating, so keep them out of the rain.
Charge the headphones before first use with the supplied USB cable and your own USB charger; a full charge takes about 3.5 hours. Hold the power button for about 2 seconds to switch them on. The first time, they go into pairing mode, so choose WH-1000XM6 in your phone's Bluetooth list; Android phones with Google Fast Pair and Windows 10 or 11 PCs with Swift Pair show a pop-up instead. Install the Sony Sound Connect app to update the software and set the noise cancelling, Ambient Sound, EQ and touch controls. For wired listening, plug the supplied headphone cable into the headphones and a 3.5 mm socket.
