The Sony WH-1000XM5 wireless noise cancelling headphones pair Sony's Integrated Processor V1 with the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1 to run eight microphones, four on each ear cup. The Auto NC Optimiser adjusts the noise cancelling to how you wear them and to air pressure. The 30 mm drivers use a carbon fibre composite dome, and LDAC and DSEE Extreme support High-Resolution Audio over Bluetooth.
Four beamforming microphones and an AI noise reduction algorithm handle calls, with a structure that cuts wind noise. Speak-to-Chat pauses the music when you start talking, a wear sensor pauses it when you take them off, and Bluetooth 5.2 multipoint keeps two devices connected. Soft fit leather and a stepless slider keep the fit light at about 250 g.
Sony rates the battery at up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on and 40 hours with it off. A full charge takes about 3.5 hours, and the 3-minute quick charge for about 3 hours of play needs a USB-PD adapter, which is not included. Unlike the WH-1000XM6, the headband does not fold; the ear cups swivel flat to fit the case. Sony gives no water resistance rating.
Charge the headphones before first use with the supplied USB cable and your own USB charger; a full charge takes about 3.5 hours. Hold the power button for about 2 seconds to switch them on. The first time, they go into pairing mode, so choose WH-1000XM5 in your phone's Bluetooth list; Android phones with Google Fast Pair and Windows 10 or 11 PCs with Swift Pair show a pop-up instead. Install the Sony Sound Connect app to update the software and set the noise cancelling, Ambient Sound, EQ and touch controls. For wired listening, plug the supplied headphone cable into the headphones and a 3.5 mm socket.
