The Sonos Sub 4 is a wireless subwoofer that adds deep bass to a Sonos soundbar or speaker. Two 5 x 8 inch elliptical woofers face each other inside a ported cabinet, so their forces cancel and the cabinet stays free of buzz and rattle. Two Class-D amplifiers drive them, and Sonos rates the bass down to 25 Hz.
It links to an Arc Ultra, Arc, Beam, Ray, Five, Era 300 or Era 100 over Wi-Fi 6, or through its Ethernet port, and the Sonos app balances it with the main speaker for you. Stand it upright or lay it on its side under a sofa. Arc Ultra, Arc, Beam and Ray can each take two Subs. Against the previous Sub, Sonos updated the electronics, moved to a matte finish and cut idle power use by up to half.
This is not a standalone speaker. It has no Bluetooth, microphones or audio inputs, and it does not work with Playbar, Playbase, older Play models or the S1 app. Reviewers praise how smoothly it blends with the main speakers. Owners of a working Sub (Gen 3) gain little, and the smaller Sub Mini suits small rooms better.
