The Sennheiser HD 620S are wired closed-back audiophile over-ear headphones for detailed listening without hearing the room, or letting the room hear you. Sennheiser announced them in May 2024 as the first closed member of its HD 600 family. Each ear cup holds an angled 42 mm dynamic transducer with a 38 mm diaphragm, made at Sennheiser's plant in Tullamore, Ireland, behind a very open baffle, so the sound seems to come from slightly in front of you, more like a pair of speakers. Sennheiser lists 6 Hz to 30 kHz, 150 ohm, 110 dB SPL and distortion below 0.05 percent.
A steel plate closes each ear cup to keep sound in and calm the reflections that make many closed headphones sound boxy. The ear pads are vented artificial leather, and the headphones weigh about 326 g without the cable. The 1.8 m cable twists and locks into one ear cup and ends in a 3.5 mm plug, with a screw-on 6.35 mm adapter. They are designed in Germany and built in China.
At 150 ohm they play from a phone or laptop, though an amplifier gets more out of them. Isolation is passive, with no noise cancelling or microphone.
Push the small plug of the cable into the socket on the ear cup until it clicks, then turn it to lock it in place; to remove it, turn it back and pull it out. Use the 3.5 mm plug as it is for a phone, laptop or DAC, or screw the 6.35 mm adapter onto it for an amplifier or receiver. Turn the volume down before you plug in, put the headphones on with the L and R marks on the headband on the correct sides, and slide the ear cups until they sit comfortably around your ears. To change the ear pads, pull them off the ear cups and press the new ones on until they click into place. Clean the headphones only with a soft, dry cloth, and do not leave them on a dummy head or chair arm for long, as this can widen the headband. Keep the box, as Sennheiser prints the serial number on the box and not on the headphones.
Sennheiser HD 620S headphones, detachable 1.8 m cable with a 3.5 mm stereo plug, screw-on 3.5 mm to 6.35 mm adapter and safety guide. No balanced 4.4 mm cable, microphone or headphone amplifier is included.
