The Sennheiser HD 599 SE are wired open-back over-ear headphones for listening at home or at a desk. Sennheiser introduced the HD 599 at IFA in September 2016 as the top model of its HD 500 range, and describes the sound as natural and spacious, close to audiophile level. The HD 599 comes in ivory with brown headband stitching and matte metallic details, and the HD 599 SE (Special Edition) in black; Sennheiser lists both with the same drivers and specifications.
Each ear cup holds a 38 mm dynamic driver, and Sennheiser's E.A.R. (Ergonomic Acoustic Refinement) design channels the sound into your ears. Sennheiser lists a 12 Hz to 38.5 kHz response, 50 ohm impedance, 106 dB SPL and distortion below 0.1 percent. Large around-the-ear cups with soft, replaceable ear pads keep pressure off your ears, and the headphones weigh about 250 g. Two detachable cables come in the box: a 3 m cable with a 6.3 mm plug for hi-fi systems and amplifiers, and a 1.2 m cable with a 3.5 mm plug for phones, laptops and music players, plus a 6.3 mm to 3.5 mm adapter.
Sennheiser built the HD 599 SE for portable devices as well as hi-fi systems, so a separate headphone amplifier is optional. Phones without a headphone socket need a USB-C or Lightning adapter. Being open-backed, they let outside sound in and let people nearby hear your music, so they suit a quiet room more than travel or the office. There is no microphone, remote or noise cancelling.
Choose the cable for your source: the 1.2 m cable with the 3.5 mm plug for a phone, laptop or music player, or the 3 m cable with the 6.3 mm plug for an amplifier, receiver or hi-fi system. Fit the 6.3 mm to 3.5 mm adapter if your device has a 3.5 mm socket and you want the longer cable. Push the cable plug firmly into the socket on the ear cup. Turn the volume down before you plug in, put the headphones on with the L and R marks on the correct sides, and adjust the headband until the ear cups sit comfortably around your ears. Clean the headphones only with a soft, dry cloth, and keep them away from heat, damp and direct sunlight.
Sennheiser HD 599 SE headphones, detachable 3 m cable with a 6.3 mm stereo plug, detachable 1.2 m cable with a 3.5 mm stereo plug, 6.3 mm to 3.5 mm adapter and safety guide. No microphone or headphone amplifier is included.
