The Sennheiser HD 560S are wired open-back audiophile over-ear headphones made for listeners who want to hear a recording as it was mixed. Sennheiser launched them in September 2020 as an entry point to its audiophile range, with a sound that takes after the HD 660S and a light frame based on the HD 599. The tuning is neutral and detailed rather than shaped for effect, with smooth bass that reaches down to the 20 to 50 Hz range that many nearfield speakers struggle with. Sennheiser lists a 6 Hz to 38 kHz response, 120 ohm impedance, 110 dB SPL and distortion below 0.05 percent.
Each ear cup holds a dynamic driver with a polymer-blend diaphragm and a strong magnet, tuned for accuracy across the whole range and for extra clarity above 10 kHz. The drivers are angled forward, a design Sennheiser calls E.A.R., so the sound reaches your ears the way it would from a pair of hi-fi speakers in front of you, giving a wide stereo image. The open ear cups sit around the ear without pressing on it, and the velour ear pads keep every contact point soft and stay cool over long sessions. The detachable 1.8 m cable ends in a 3.5 mm plug, and a 6.35 mm adapter screws onto it for amplifiers and hi-fi equipment.
At 120 ohm the HD 560S play at a good volume from most laptops, music players and audio interfaces, and a headphone amplifier or DAC adds control and headroom. Being open-backed, they let outside sound in and let people nearby hear your music, so they suit a quiet room more than travel or a shared office. There is no microphone, remote or noise cancelling in the box; a balanced 4.4 mm cable and the HD 500 BAM boom microphone are sold separately.
Push the small plug of the cable firmly into the socket on the ear cup. Use the 3.5 mm plug as it is for a laptop, music player, DAC or audio interface, or screw the 6.35 mm adapter onto it for an amplifier or receiver with a standard headphone socket. Turn the volume down before you plug in, put the headphones on with the L and R marks on the correct sides, and adjust the headband until the ear cups sit comfortably around your ears. Keep the open ear cups uncovered for the best sound. Remove and fit the ear pads with care when you replace them. Keep the headphones dry and away from heaters and direct sun, and clean them only with a soft, dry cloth.
Sennheiser HD 560S headphones, detachable 1.8 m cable with a 3.5 mm stereo plug, screw-on 3.5 mm to 6.35 mm adapter and safety guide. No storage bag, balanced 4.4 mm cable, microphone or headphone amplifier is included.
