The Sennheiser HD 505 are wired open-back over-ear headphones for people moving up to serious listening at home. Sennheiser announced them in February 2025 and brought them to India in April 2025. The tuning is clear and detailed, with clean mids, extended treble that stays free of harshness and bass that reaches below 20 Hz, and Sennheiser says it goes further into the sub-bass than the HD 599. Sennheiser lists a 12 Hz to 38.5 kHz response, 120 ohm impedance, 107.9 dB SPL and distortion below 0.2 percent.
Each ear cup holds a 120 ohm dynamic driver made at Sennheiser's own factory in Tullamore, Ireland. The drivers are angled forward in the open cups, so the sound seems to come from in front of you, much like a pair of speakers, which helps with music, films and placing footsteps in games. The HD 505 are built on the HD 500 series frame and weigh 237 g without the cable, so the clamping force can stay low. A synthetic leather headband, velour ear pads and metal mesh ear cup covers with copper accents finish the design.
At 120 ohm the HD 505 play at a good volume from most laptops, PCs, music players and audio interfaces, and a headphone amplifier or DAC adds headroom. The detachable 1.8 m cable plugs into the left ear cup and ends in a 3.5 mm plug, with a screw-on 6.35 mm adapter for amplifiers and hi-fi equipment. HD 500 series cables and ear pads fit, including a balanced 4.4 mm cable and the HD 500 BAM boom microphone, both sold separately. Being open-backed, they let outside sound in and let people nearby hear your music, so they suit a quiet room more than travel or a shared office.
Push the small plug of the cable firmly into the socket on the left ear cup. Use the 3.5 mm plug as it is for a laptop, PC, music player, DAC or audio interface, or screw the 6.35 mm adapter onto it for an amplifier or receiver with a standard headphone socket. Turn the volume down before you plug in, put the headphones on with the L and R marks on the correct sides, and adjust the headband until the ear cups sit comfortably around your ears. Keep the open ear cups uncovered for the best sound, and store the headphones in the drawstring bag when you are not using them. Keep them dry and away from heaters and direct sun, and clean them only with a soft, dry cloth.
Sennheiser HD 505 Copper Edition headphones, detachable 1.8 m cable with a 3.5 mm stereo plug, screw-on 3.5 mm to 6.35 mm adapter, drawstring bag and safety guide. No balanced 4.4 mm cable, microphone or headphone amplifier is included.
