The Sennheiser HD 400U are USB-C wired over-ear headphones with a mic, the USB-C follow-up to the HD 400S. They plug straight into a phone, tablet, laptop or handheld game console with no pairing, app or charging, and the digital connection carries uncompressed audio at up to 24-bit, 96 kHz. Sennheiser tunes them for balanced sound with clear mids, detailed highs and controlled bass.

The closed-back ear cups sit around the ear and cut down outside noise without any electronics, and the soft ear pads can be replaced when they wear. They weigh 217 g and fold to fit in a bag. The 1.4 m cable detaches and carries a one-button remote for music and calls, plus a MEMS microphone for your voice. Sennheiser lists class compliant, plug and play support for Android, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Windows, ChromeOS and SteamOS.

The supplied cable ends in a USB-C plug, so your device needs a USB-C port that carries audio; iPhones with a Lightning port will not fit. For a 3.5 mm headphone socket, Sennheiser offers an analogue cable separately, and none is in the box. The remote has no volume keys, so you set the volume on your device. There is no active noise cancelling, and Sennheiser gives no water or sweat resistance rating.

Push the small plug of the cable into the socket on the ear cup and turn it until it clicks into place; to remove it, turn it back and pull it out. Plug the USB-C connector into your phone, tablet or laptop and the headphones work straight away, with nothing to pair, install or charge. Set the volume on your device. Press the remote button once to play or pause or to answer or end a call, twice for the next track and three times for the previous one, and hold it for more than 2 seconds for your phone's voice assistant. If there is no sound, push the cable fully in at both ends and check that your device sends audio over USB-C.

Sennheiser gives the first owner a one-year warranty from the date on the invoice when this product is bought new from an authorised Sennheiser dealer in India. A defect in materials or workmanship in that year is repaired, or the product or faulty part replaced, free of charge at Sennheiser's choice. To claim, contact Sennheiser India customer support or visit a Sennheiser service centre with the original invoice, as every claim needs it. Accessories in the box, the ear pads, normal wear and tear, damage from misuse or accidents, and products opened or repaired by anyone other than an authorised service partner are not covered.
