The Marshall Middleton is a portable Bluetooth speaker in Black and Brass that measures 230 x 95 x 109 mm and weighs 1.8 kg. A detachable carry strap screws onto one end, and the textured silicone sleeve comes off for cleaning. It is rated IP67, so it is dust tight and survives 30 minutes in 1 m of water.
Inside are two 3-inch 15W woofers, two 0.6-inch 10W tweeters and two passive radiators, each driver with its own Class D amplifier. Marshall's True Stereophonic processing sends stereo sound in every direction. On top sit a control knob for power, playback and volume, plus separate bass and treble controls. The battery lasts 20+ hours, a full USB-C charge takes 4.5 hours, and 20 minutes gives about 2 hours of play.
Bluetooth 5.1 reaches up to 10 m, a 3.5 mm AUX input takes a wired source, and the USB-C port can also charge a phone. There is no microphone, so it cannot take calls or answer a voice assistant, and at 1.8 kg it is a heavier carry than the 0.7 kg Emberton II. Stack Mode links it with other Middleton, Emberton II or Willen speakers.
Push and hold the control knob for 2 seconds to switch the speaker on. The first time, it goes straight into pairing mode; after that, hold the Bluetooth button until its light pulses slowly red. Pick MIDDLETON in your phone's Bluetooth list. To fit the strap, remove its screw, thread the strap through the hinge on the speaker and tighten the screw again. The Marshall Bluetooth app is optional and adds bass and treble control and software updates.
