The JBL Bar 500MK2 is a 5.1 channel soundbar that comes with a 10 inch wireless subwoofer and 750W of peak power. The bar holds five racetrack drivers and four 20 mm tweeters. MultiBeam 3.0 widens the sound across the room, and virtual Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X add a sense of height. PureVoice 2.0 lifts dialogue based on the scene and the volume, and a microphone on the bar calibrates the sound to your room.
Connect it to your TV with the supplied HDMI cable through eARC, or use optical. An HDMI input takes a console or streaming box and passes 4K video with Dolby Vision and HDR10+ on to the TV. Over dual-band Wi-Fi 6 it plays music through AirPlay, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and Roon Ready, and Bluetooth 5.3 works with any phone.
There are no up-firing speakers, so height effects are simulated and subtler than on bars with dedicated drivers. There is no built-in voice assistant, though a separate Google Assistant or Siri speaker can control music. Owners mostly praise the deep bass and clear dialogue, and a few found the first setup fiddly.
