Loris Azzaro made his name dressing women in glamorous couture, and in 1978 he turned to men with his first masculine fragrance. Azzaro Pour Homme was the result, and more than four decades later it remains the cornerstone of the brand and a reference point for the aromatic fougère style.
The opening is bright and herbal. Lavender sits at the centre, sharpened by lemon and bergamot and given an unusual licorice warmth by star anise. Basil, clary sage and caraway add a green, slightly savoury edge that keeps it from reading as a simple barbershop lavender.
As it settles, the scent turns drier and spicier. Vetiver, cedar and sandalwood bring a woody backbone, while cardamom, juniper berries and patchouli add warmth. The drydown is where its age shows in the best way: oakmoss and leather give it a mossy, slightly rugged depth, softened by amber, musk and tonka bean.
Azzaro describes the composition as fougère aromatic woody, built from more than 320 ingredients, over half of them of natural origin. The octagonal amber glass bottle with its black cap, designed by Pierre Dinand, has barely changed since launch.
This is a confident, classic scent for men who like a fragrance with character. Community votes lean towards autumn, winter and spring, and it is worn as often in the evening as during the day.
Spray onto pulse points such as the neck, wrists and chest from about 15 cm away. Let it dry naturally without rubbing. One or two sprays are usually enough.
Keep the bottle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Close the cap after use and avoid storing it in a bathroom where humidity changes often.
