The Apple HomePod mini is a small smart speaker for homes that use an iPhone or iPad. This is the original HomePod mini that Apple introduced in 2020. Its 345 g mesh-covered body hides a full-range driver with a neodymium magnet and two force-cancelling passive radiators, and an acoustic waveguide pushes the sound out of the base so it fills the room evenly from every side. The Apple S5 chip adjusts loudness and dynamic range in real time.
Two HomePod mini speakers in one room make a stereo pair, several around the house play music in sync, and an Apple TV 4K (sold separately) can use it as its speaker. Siri listens through three microphones plus a fourth that cancels out the music, and can tell up to six household voices apart. As a home hub it runs HomeKit and Matter accessories over Thread, reports the room's temperature and humidity, and can alert you when it hears a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm.
Setup needs an iPhone or iPad, and music reaches the speaker over Wi-Fi through AirPlay, so it does not work as a Bluetooth speaker for Android phones. It has no battery and no AUX input; it runs from the 20W USB-C power adapter in the box. The White model has a colour-matched woven cable and a tinted backlit touch surface on top.
Before you start, connect your iPhone or iPad to the Wi-Fi network you will use for the HomePod mini, turn on Bluetooth and install any software update. Plug the HomePod mini into the 20W power adapter and wait for the slow pulsing light on top. Hold the unlocked iPhone or iPad a few centimetres from the speaker, tap Set Up when the card appears and follow the steps. If the card does not appear, open the Home app, tap Add Accessory, then More options, and choose HomePod mini. Setup is not possible from an Android phone.
