The Apple HomePod (2nd Generation) is a smart speaker for homes that use an iPhone or iPad. Inside its 168 mm tall mesh body, a 4-inch woofer moves its diaphragm 20 mm for deep bass, while five horn-loaded tweeters around the base spread vocals and detail across the room. Apple's S7 chip and room sensing listen for reflections off nearby walls and tune the sound to where the speaker sits.
Spatial Audio tracks play in Dolby Atmos, and two HomePods make a stereo pair. With an Apple TV 4K (sold separately) it becomes the sound system for your TV. Siri hears you through four far-field microphones and can tell up to six voices apart for personal requests. As a home hub it runs HomeKit and Matter accessories over Thread, reads the room's temperature and humidity, and listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
Setup needs an iPhone or iPad, and music arrives over Wi-Fi through AirPlay, so it will not work as a Bluetooth speaker for Android phones. There is no battery and no AUX or other wired input; it runs from the mains. The White model has a backlit touch surface on top for play, skip, volume and Siri.
Before you start, connect your iPhone or iPad to the Wi-Fi network you will use for the HomePod, turn on Bluetooth and install any software update. Plug the HomePod in and wait for the slow pulsing white light on top. Hold the unlocked iPhone or iPad a few centimetres from the speaker, tap Set Up when the card appears and follow the steps. If the card does not appear, open the Home app, tap Add Accessory, then More options, and choose HomePod. Setup is not possible from an Android phone.
