The 3rd Gen. Echo Dot smart speaker has a compact, fabric-covered puck design and a 1.6 inch speaker, a big step up from the 1.1 inch driver in the 2nd Gen. Voices are clear and music sounds fuller than the size suggests, though as a mono speaker it suits a bedroom, desk or kitchen shelf best.
Alexa plays music from Amazon Music, Spotify, JioSaavn, Apple Music and Hungama, sets alarms and reminders, reads the news and controls Alexa-compatible lights, ACs, TVs and geysers, in English or Hindi. Four far-field microphones hear you across a quiet room, but with loud music playing you may need to raise your voice.
Unlike the newer 5th Gen., it keeps a 3.5mm stereo audio out, so you can wire it to a larger speaker (cable not included) or connect one over Bluetooth. There is no battery, so it stays plugged in with the 15W adapter from the box. Press mic off and the light ring turns red to show the microphones are disconnected.
